Required Materials
Instrument
Purchasing an acoustic piano is a significant investment, and I understand that it might not be possible for every family. However you must have at least an 88-weighted-key digital piano with pedals in order to begin lessons, as concepts such as dynamic range, use of the sustain pedal, and proper hand technique are taught from the very beginning. If you are looking for an acoustic instrument, I highly recommend Falcetti Pianos. They have a large inventory of both new and used upright and grand pianos, as well as a competitive instrument trade-in policy.
Sheet Music
Students are expected to purchase their own copies of major repertoire and method books, all of which can be found online. I encourage students to support Sheet Music Plus.
Metronome
A metronome is essential. Although there are many phone-based apps, I recommend investing in a physical device that children can use independently. I love my Seiko metronome. I’ve had it for nearly 30 years and it’s still going strong.
Music
The Piano Adventure series by Nancy and Randall Faber is a great place to start. They have a program tailed to the very young (ages 5-6), a standard “beginner” course (ages 6-11), as well as a series designed for adult beginners. During your first lesson we will go over your goals and specific musical interests to determine the best program of study.
